Sitting in our suite at the Marriott Grand in Moscow, I’m overwhelmed to think we’re here…in Russia…the country that for most of my youth, was the avowed nemesis of the United States; the country that would and could at any moment, launch ICBM’s (missles) effectively wiping out half of the US, and starting what would certainly be WWIII.
Now…we fly across the pond…representing a company that is the “poster child” for the American Free Enterprise system…the living example that in America, you can have anything your heart desires if you’re willing to do the work, overcome the adversity, be persistent, and not become discouraged. Of course, in a country that has been mostly atheistic for the past 70 years, it’s difficult to gain any traction when we talk about the importance of our faith…which was and is, an integral part of Mary Kay’s vision. However…we will not shy away! J
Arlene Lenarz, NSD Emeritus used to always say “Mary Kay is not just for the chosen few…but for the few who choose.”
I’m so grateful that Kathy didn’t let her fears and insecurities keep her from making the right “choice” to at least investigate this business. And how timely is this letter….since Career Conference is right around the corner.
.
You’ll recall Kathy joined Mary Kay in November of 1981 – didn’t even open her showcase box until January 1982. Then in February she facialed her mom first, then her sister Gail held a show for her with three women and her sister in attendance. Kathy was so nervous, she hid in the bathroom and her sister Gail “read” the flip chart and they did the class themselves! Kathy finally came out just before they were ready to leave.
She came home, ready to quit…but had been challenged to get into her Red Jacket – so she could room with Debi Moore at Career Conference in St. Louis. There was no Conference in Toledo…but a 10 hour drive each way would be cheaper than a flight. With a “little” help, Kathy became a Star Recruiter…and jumped in a tiny compact car with 3 relative strangers for the 10 hr. trek to Career Conference, April 1st, and 2nd. BUT THAT DECISION CHANGED EVERYTHING!
For the first time, Kathy saw the “Big Picture” – that Mary Kay the Company, was greater than the sum of it’s parts. She saw every type of woman achieving, growing, learning, encouraging. She witnessed the prizes being given, the recognition, the training, the career cars being earned….and she learned a new word; commitment.
She came home from that Conference and decided to become a Director. March she earned her 1st Gold Medal, April she earned another, and again in May…so she now had her qualifying team to go into qualification – so in June she was at Mary Kay’s home.
Career Conference isn’t just another meeting…unless that’s the way you see it. OR…it can be your ticket….to the entire globe.
YOU - could be asked to host the first Pan-European Conference in Lisbon, Portugal.
YOU – could be requested as the host of Seminar in Munich, Germany.
YOU – could be the spotlight trainer for Career Conference in Prague, Czech Republic, then return as the host of their Seminar.
YOU – could be enjoying a luxurious Pacific resort in Manzanillo, Mexico as you share your knowledge with the NSD’s from all of Mexico.
YOU – could be enjoying a walking tour of the ancient city of Kiev, Ukraine…just before you spend three days with Ukrainian NSD’s and Top Directors – just learning about free markets and Mary Kay.
YOU – could be standing with your husband in Red Square…overwhelmed as I am…that Kathy “chose” to simply work her business…and never quit.
Our dear friend and NSD Rena Tarbet used to say “If you wait until all the lights are green, you’ll never go anywhere.” But…if you go to the corner….you’ll be able to see to the next corner…and one step at a time, you’ll find your way to your ultimate destiny.
Career Conference can be either the FIRST STEP for some of you….or the NEXT STEP for you. Either way…you simply cannot afford to miss it. Be among the “few who choose.”
